UCSD Hockey Main PageJan. 20- Tritons Fall to Northern Arizona 7-1 The Tritons hosted Northern Arizona University Friday night at UTC for their only meeting this season. The game started with back and forth action with NAU taking a slight advantage in puck possession and scoring chances. NAU capitalized on this advantage by starting the scoring 7 minutes into the first period. Then NAU extended their lead 4 minutes later beating Ryan Corriveau for the second time of the night. After the second NAU goal Ryan made some great saves to keep the Tritons in the game after 20 minutes of play.In the second period Ryan continued his solid net-minding and stymied several NAU scoring chances. While on the other end of the ice the NAU goalie also played well when he was tested by the Tritons. The Ice Jacks scored for a third time near the 10 minute mark of the second taking a 3 goal lead. Late in the second period our Tritons got a spark when defenseman Tommy Tuohy fired a long stretch pass to Narm West who used his speed to get a half step on the NAU defense and fired a shot over the glove of the NAU goalie. Down by 2 in the third the Tritons started to take more chances to try to generate offense. This strategy was working to an extent the Tritons were getting more scoring chances but NAU held. Then the Tritons got into a little bit of penalty trouble taking two penalties just minutes apart. The Tritons special teams killed off the first penalty but could not stop NAU on the second. This NAU power play goal extended the Ice Jacks lead back to 3 and with only 10 minutes left in the game the Tritons were forced to take chances to generate offense. NAU took advantage of this situation and countered well getting several odd man rushes late in the game capitalizing on three of them for the final score of 7 to 1. Jan. 15- Tritons Split Nor Cal Road Trip The UCSD ice hockey team traveled to Northern California this weekend to play Santa Rosa CC on Friday night and San Jose State Sunday afternoon. With a limited number of players making the trip the Tritons fell to Santa Rosa 7 to 1 in their only meeting this year but managed to pull off the 5 to 4 win over San Jose State to even the season series against the Spartans.Friday night at the Snoopy rink in Santa Rosa a large crowd watched as their home team controlled the play of a physical game. The nine Tritons dressed for the game, including goalie, just could not match the four lines that Santa Rosa rolled throughout the game. The main highlight for the Tritons came in the second period when Ben Song while in a battle for the puck along the boards lost his stick but still managed to kick the puck over to Kevin Zhang who skated the puck out from behind the net and fired a great shot past the Santa Rosa net minder while being dragged down from behind by a Santa Rosa Defense men. The Tritons had one goal later in the game waved when Gerrit Davis fired the puck into the top corner from close range. The goal was waved off because the official ruled that the net had come off the moorings before the puck was in. This game was closer than the score indicates but Santa Rosa was the better team on that night. San Jose State got the scoring started 6 minutes into the Sunday afternoon contest in Redwood City taking what would be their only lead in a game that was tied 5 times. The Tritons match that score about 5 minutes later when goalie Ryan Corriveau showed that he can pass the puck as well as stop it by picking up an assist on Alexey Voronin’s goal. Ryan made a quick pass to Tommy Tuohy who passed to Alexey who skated the puck through the neutral zone and deep into the San Jose State zone before blasting a wrist shot past their goalie to tie the game at 1. Later in the first period Tommy Touhy got another point by taking a pass from Kevin Zhang. Tommy then skated the puck from the point to the high slot and fired a shot into the top corner giving the Tritons their first lead of the night. The Spartans tied the game at 2 late in the first period. Ryan Dirvin put the Tritons back in the lead early in the second period when he buried a rebound after the San Jose State goalie stopped Alexey Voronin’s slap shot from the point. Again San Jose State answered with a goal of their own to tie the game. Again the Tritons put the pressure back on State when Matt Smallcomb acquired the puck and pasted it to Kevin Zhang who then carried the puck down low and beat the goalie giving the Triton’s back their lead. About 8 minutes into the 3rd period the Spartans tied the game at 4. The tie would only last for about 3 minutes though before Kevin Zhang would pick up the game winner finishing a play set up by Ben Song. The Spartans applied pressure on the Tritons in an attempt to tie the game again but Ryan Corriveau made some clutch saves when they did manage to get some chances including a big save with 2 seconds on the clock. Now the Tritons are getting ready to face Northern Arizona University on Friday night at UTC. Nov. 11- UCSD Hockey Experiences a Tough Loss Against Chapman The Tritons fell to Chapman University 5 to 6 on Saturday night in a closely contested game. The Tritons had 11 skaters for this contest and were using two lines with one player rotating into the lineup. This strategy provided some continuity to the Tritons lines. Unfortunately the referee noticed that several of the Triton players were missing the ear pieces to their helmets and after some debate about required equipment the players without ear pieces had to leave the ice until they obtained some. This left the Tritons temporarily with 2 defensemen and 5 forwards and all semblance of line continuity disappeared. The game itself started with the Tritons holding the puck in the Chapman zone for the first few minutes but one mistake about 5 minutes into the game saw Chapman get the early lead. After that first goal the play was a little more even with the Tritons still getting the better opportunities. Then with less than 5 minutes left in the first period Gerrit Davis beat the Chapman goalie on the glove side after receiving a pass from Ryan Dirvin to tie the game. Chapman bounced right back and retook the lead very late in the first period. The second period got off to a good start when quick puck movement by Tommy Tuohy and Kyle McNamara got the puck to Zoltan Berecz who skated through the Chapman defense and fired a shot past their net minder to tie the game at 2. Slightly over a minute later Gerrit Davis passed the puck from the corner to Mike Tietsort down low who finished the play giving the Tritons their first lead of the night. Later in the second period on the power play Andreas Djokic passed the puck from the corner to Kyle McNamara who fired a shot just wide, but the puck went back to Andreas who passed it back to Kyle in almost the exact same spot and this time Kyle’s shot was perfect. Chapman pushed back and pulled within one late in the second. Chapman tied the game with 10 minutes left in the game and then the Tritons got into some penalty trouble. Chapman retook the lead scoring on a two man advantage at the 6:49 mark of the third period. With less than 3 minutes remaining in the game Kit Wong forced a Chapman turnover and beat the Chapman goalie to tie the game yet again. Unfortunately Chapman scored with 22 seconds left in the game to take the 6 to 5 lead. The Tritons almost forced OT generating a few scoring opportunities in the last seconds of the game, Kyle McNamara almost tied it with 7 seconds left but the Chapman goalie held. |
